Plaisance of Antioch

Plaisance of Antioch (late 1230s–1261) was a Cypriot queen dowager who ruled the kingdoms of Cyprus and Jerusalem as regent from 1253 and 1258, respectively, until her death. She was the third wife of King Henry I of Cyprus and the mother of his only child, King Hugh II. Hugh II succeeded to the throne as a minor, and the widowed Queen Plaisance took up government in his name. She took Balian of Arsuf as her second husband in 1254, but separated from him in 1255. She attempted to marry herself and her son into the English royal family, but did not succeed. In 1258 she travelled to Acre with her son and was recognized as his bailli in his capacity as titular regent for his kinsman King Conradin. As such, she intervened in the war waged by the Venetians and their allies against the Genoese and their allies, supporting the former. She was sharply criticised by the Church for an adulterous affair and died soon after.

Henry I of Cyprus

Henry I of Cyprus

Henry I (French: Henri; 3 May 1217 – 18 January 1253), called the Fat, was the king of Cyprus from 1218 until his death. Noted for his corpulence, Henry was a pliant king who relied heavily on his kin from the powerful Ibelin family.

Henry was the son of King Hugh I, whom he succeeded as an infant. His mother, Alice of Champagne, held the regency during his minority, but power was wielded by her uncles Philip and John of Ibelin. Emperor Frederick II also claimed the right to rule Cyprus during Henry's minority, leading to a long war with the Ibelins, which dominated the first part of Henry's reign. The Ibelins prevailed and retained a leading role after Henry reached the age of majority in 1232.

In 1246, King Henry succeeded his mother, Queen Alice, as regent of the Kingdom of Jerusalem in the name of his kinsman King Conrad II. He appointed Balian of Ibelin to rule the mainland state in his name. In 1248 he sailed with King Louis IX of France to Egypt on the Seventh Crusade, but returned to Cyprus shortly after, leaving his men to serve under Louis.

Henry's first two marriages, to Alice of Montferrat and Stephanie of Lampron, were childless. In 1250 he married Plaisance of Antioch. He died shortly after the birth of their only child, Hugh II, who succeeded him as king.

Balian of Arsuf

Balian of Ibelin (1239 – 29 September 1277) was the Lord of Arsuf from 1258 until the early 1260s (probably 1261), when he leased it to the Knights Hospitaller. He was the son and successor of John, Lord of Arsuf and Constable of Jerusalem. At the time when he leased/rented it to the hospital, his fief of Arsuf was worth six knights' fees and twenty sergeants'; the Hospital took up his obligations with the exception of the servise de cors.

He was married to Plaisance of Antioch from 1254 until their divorce in 1258, after which he moved from Antioch to Tripoli. He was created Constable of Jerusalem like his father had been in 1268 and held that post until his death. Hugh III of Cyprus and Jerusalem appointed Balian bailiff, effectively regent, of the kingdom upon returning to Cyprus in October 1276. Hugh's claim to the royal title, however, was disputed by Charles I of Naples, who sent Roger of Sanseverino to Acre as his bailiff in 1277.

Balian initially refused to admit Roger into the citadel until papers signed by Charles, Mary of Antioch, and Pope John XXI were produced and the Knights Hospitallers and John of Vercelli, Patriarch of Jerusalem, had refused to intervene. To avoid war, he allowed Roger in and Charles was proclaimed king.

He died on 29 September 1277, the day being known from a single copy of the Annales de Terre Sainte. He was succeeded by his son John, titular Lord of Arsuf (1277–1309), who married Isabella of Ibelin, daughter of Balian seneschal of Cyprus.
